Take Action Against Abuse

If you or someone you love has suffered abuse by a therapist, you have options.

Option 1: Terminate Treatment Immediately

If your therapist is exhibiting questionable behavior or outright abuse, terminate treatment immediately. Consider sending your therapist an email explaining your reasons for termination, and do not feel obligated to engage if they attempt to contact you afterward. Keep records of your email along with any response from the therapist. This will create a trail to support your claims if you decide to take further action.

Option 2: Verify They are a Licensed Professional

It isn’t uncommon to find a therapist through a referral or seemingly reputable website and assume the information provided is true. However, the burden of responsibility falls on the patient to verify that a therapist’s credentials are legitimate. Reference your therapist’s state licensing board to verify they are an actively licensed practitioner and if they have additional complaints filed against them. Search your state’s licensure directory:

Option 4: File a Formal Complaint with the State Licensing Board

Contact the licensing board in the state in which your therapist is registered and follow their specific instructions. Keep in mind, procedures for filing complaints vary for each jurisdiction. Additional information regarding filing a complaint can be found on the

Option 3: Seek Legal Advice from an Attorney

Find a reputable attorney, preferably one who represents therapist abuse. Be prepared with a timeline of events to present to your legal counsel. Compile as much evidence as possible to support your claims. If you decide to file both a civil and licensing complaint some states have a preferred order in which these complaints are executed. Consult an attorney for all legal advice.

Option 5: File a Criminal or Civil Lawsuit (if applicable)

It is highly recommended to hire an attorney before filing a lawsuit. As mentioned, if you file multiple complaints/lawsuits, there may be a preferred order in which they are filed. The legal process can be emotionally taxing, time-consuming, and requires significant effort, patience, and mental fortitude. Legal proceedings can take years. However, this option can potentially bring forth criminal justice or monetary restitution, depending on your circumstances. If you move forward with a lawsuit, establish a support system of trusted individuals to help you through the tough moments.
